After a laundry list of injuries plagued Aerosmith's
summer tour with ZZ Top, the band has finally been
forced to cancel the remainder of the trek. Earlier in the summer,
bassist Tom Hamilton missed a few shows due to some
unspecified "noninvasive surgery," and guitarist Brad Whitford
sat out a number of gigs after suffering a head injury. The band had to
postpone a few shows last month when Steven Tyler
tore a leg muscle, but this time his injuries are too much to overcome.
Tyler fell from the stage during the August 5 show at the annual Sturgis
Motorcycle Rally
in South Dakota, and doctors have advised him to take the time to
properly recuperate from the accident that resulted in a broken
shoulder and stitches to the head. In his current condition, Tyler
is
unable to tour and the band wants to give him time to get healthy,
Aerosmith said in a statement.
"Words can't express the sadness I feel for having to cancel this
tour," said Joe Perry.
"I would like to thank our loyal fans for sticking by us through thick
and thin and all the good energy they are sending our way. We hope
we
can get the Aerosmith machine up and running again as soon as
possible. I sure am going to miss playing with ZZ Top just as I'm
sure
the fans are going to miss seeing them playing with us as well. My
hat's off to our crew for putting up with this crazy stop and start
tour. In my estimation, it was one of the best looking and best run
tours we've ever had."
Whitford added, "All of us here in the
Aerosmith organization and all of the people who contribute to making
our shows possible are in a state of shock. We never anticipated
this
tour coming to such a swift and unfortunate ending. Our thoughts and
prayers go out to Steven for a speedy recovery and return to good
health."
In a message released to fans, Tyler described exactly what
happened at the Sturgis show. "A
major thunderstorm had delayed the show for an hour, but after it
passed through, the full moon and tens of thousands of my biker buddies
were ready to rock! It was one of the best shows we've played in a long
time," Tyler said, according to E! Online "And just
as I'm
thinking, 'It doesn't get any better than this'... FUSES BLOW! We have
a complete audio sound system failure! We were in the middle of
'Love
in an Elevator,' and the band slowly realized something was up. Well, I
wasn't gonna go hide under the big top and play ROCK STAR and wait for
everything to be fixed. I wanted to go out to the crowd to continue the
show... so, the Train Kept A- Rollin' and I ran out on the cat walk and
grabbed my mic to finish the song. I was doing the Tyler shuffle and
then I zigged when I should have zagged... and I slipped, and as I
live
on the edge... I fell off the edge! I landed upside down, and after 20
stitches on the back of my head, and a broken left shoulder, I just
want to say that I'm plain grateful that I didn't break my neck!"
